Oppose Billions More for Iraq War!

From Just Foreign Policy. Take action here: http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/involved/iraq.html

Some in Washington refuse to acknowledge that the majority of Americans, like the majority of Iraqis, want an end to the U.S. occupation of Iraq. USA Today and Congressional Quarterly report that the Bush administration will ask Congress for a record amount of war money in 2007 - perhaps as high as $160 billion. That would be in addition to the $435 billion in military spending Congress already authorized for 2007.

That would mean one out of every five of our taxpayer dollars next year would go to military spending, and that's not even counting $17 billion on US nuclear weapons.

Money spent on the military and war is money that will not be available for pressing domestic needs, like health care, schools and combating poverty. Senator Kent Conrad, the Democrat who will oversee the Senate budget next year, told USA Today the high military price tag "is going to increasingly become an issue." He said it could restrict the availability of money to expand Medicare's prescription drug coverage.

We set up a web page that makes it easy to write a letter to your senators and representatives asking them not to pour more money into a failed and destructive policy in Iraq. More money means more young American soldiers will die and be horribly injured in this needless war and more Iraqi civilians will die at the hands of our troops.

Our suggested talking points also ask senators and representatives to place conditions on any money that is appropriated, setting a firm deadline for the withdrawal of all troops and requiring the administration to directly engage Iraq's neighbors, especially Iran and Syria.

Uganda Calling

Answer the call.

Sorry if this is not allowed in the community, I can remove it if asked - but I thought some of you might be interested in this new community.

I'm a board member of ugandacalling, and we exist to raise awareness of and work for the end of the civil war in Northern Uganda, which has victimized many innocent civilians, particularly children, and left many homeless and desperately poor. We're trying to provide resources for local groups working on this issue - collecting petitions for groups to circulate, providing ideas for fundraisers for worthy projects, posting news articles and bulletins about Uganda, and letting activists and interested people get together to learn more and network with each other. And we still need lots of people to help us carry on all these functions and get us off the ground as a nonprofit - as well as community leaders who'd like to start something for Uganda!

If you're interested in learning more or helping out, please check out the community - everyone's very nice and positive, we'd love to see you!

Please... sign this petition.

I just ask that you take a moment to read this petition and consider adding your signature. Israel has become a military monstrosity without bounds and Lebanon desperately needs our help. Please, at least take the time to visit the web site.

Thank you for listening.

In love and peace,
David Filkins

International Day of Peace

Today is the

International Day of Peace

"The International Day of Peace was first established in 1981 by a resolution 36/67 of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session every September. In 2001 the resolution 55/282 was strengthened to fix the date annually on 21 September and for it to be a day of nonviolence and cease-fire. The resolution was adopted ..."

If you please may, let us do one thing today: We all argue with others, especially those who are dearest and nearest to us. But today, tell three people (if possible, the three people you last argued with) what you appreciate about them, how much they mean to you and the important place they have in your life and in your heart. It doesn't have to be long or sentimental, but tell them. Then ask them to do the same in turn.

NRA: Give the Teachers Guns!

“I’m not saying that that means every teacher should have a gun or not, but what I am saying is we need to look at all the options at what will truly protect the students,” the NRA’s first vice president, Sandra S. Froman, told The Associated Press.

Gun-control restrictions would not have prevented Jeff Weise, 16, from killing nine people and himself Monday at Red Lake High School near Bemidji, Minn., said Froman, an attorney expected next month to be elected president of the NRA, which claims 4 million members.

The presence of an unarmed guard at the school failed to stop the siege, she noted.

“No gun law, no policy that you could implement now or that was already implemented, I think, could possibly prevent someone so intent on destruction,” she said. “I think everything’s on the table as far as looking at what we need to do to make our schools safe for our students.”

Yup, there's no way to stop bringing firearms into schools than to bring firearms into school. Mmhmm.

Positive News, a good newspaper

Hello everybody,

Not sure if most of you know about this newspaper, but it's really nice and almost all the stories are online too, which is great. With all the negativity that we experience daily in the news and around us, it's nice to be able to hear something positive from time to time. Reading the newspaper makes me feel good about the world, and so I wanted to share the info so that others can feel good too. (I'm cross-posting this pretty widely so sorry to those of you who will read it more than once).

Positive News

Positive News reports on the people, events and influences that are
helping to create a more positive future for the world and its people,
reporting – issues rarely covered by the mainstream media – and promotes
the many enterprises that are working for a sustainable future.

Article 9, Japan's promise of peace to the world, is under threat again...
Since the symbol originated here in Japan, I'm suggesting to people that the Japanese government might require a peaceful reminder. If you wouldn't mind sending a few birds, write "article 9" on them somewhere with perhaps anything else you'd like to add, and send them to this address:

1-6-1 Nagata-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-8914, Japan
